Texas racers win big at Thunder Road Raceway Park

Sunday

GILLIAM, La. – Texas racers dominated the winners circle this past weekend at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Thunder Road Raceway Park.

Jerry Emmons, Pasadena, Texas, worked his way through the field in his’69 Chevrolet and ran 10.404 seconds at 124.89 mph in his final round victory in Stock Eliminator over Austin Williams, Burleson, Texas.

Another Texas racer took home a win in Super Comp as Tony Brown, of Hallsville, Texas, faced off against Joel Covington, Center, Texas. Brown posted a winning run of 8.902 seconds at 182.65 mph while Covington went 8.915 seconds at 176.97 mph. Brown got his second Super Comp win in a close race with a margin of victory of 0.0040 seconds, approximately 12 inches over Covington of Center, Texas.

In Comp Eliminator, it was Craig Bourgeois, Metarie, La, scoring the win over Troy Galibraith, Indianapolis. Bourgeois posted a winning run of 7.155 seconds at 140.30 mph. Bourgeois was off the line first and was able to get the win over Galibraith earning his thirteenth divisional Wally.

In the division’s Sunset Racecraft Top Sportsman Series it was Jerry Jordan, Longview, Texas, taking the win over Jimmy Lewis, Forney, Texas. This was a close race between these two Top Sportsman racers. Jordan had a margin of victory of 0.0080 seconds, approximately 2 feet after a winning pass of 7.518 seconds at 184.04 mph. Lewis had a runner-up finish of 7.019 seconds at 195.99 mph.

In the division’s KPE Better Performance Engine Top Dragster series it was J.R. Baxter, Waxahachie, Texas, taking the win over Larry Eidson, of Mineral Wells, Texas. Baxter was almost perfect at both ends of the track to take the double-breakout win.

In the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson, Lisa Bennett took the Sportsman Motorcycle win when Derek Dorey broke out. Bennett from Lucas, Texas, ran an 8.213 second lap, at 156.15 mph on her ’95 Suzuki as Derek Dorey, Kingwood, Texas ran a pass of 9.066 seconds at 138.93 mph.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Clint Rigby, League City, Texas earning his first Super Stock divisional Wally; Jimmy Lewis, Forney, Texas, got the easy win in Super Gas; and Frank Kohuteki, Mesquite, Texas walked away with the Super Street Wally in a double breakout victory.

South Central Division racers head to Thunder Valley Raceway Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, October 9-11.

GILLIAM, La. – Day two is in the books and the fields are set at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Thunder Road Raceway Park. Qualifying was finalized in the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and the remaining classes in competition. 

Gates open on Sunday at 8 a.m. with racers battling it out in head to head competition for a chance at taking home the trophy and their share of cash and contingency awards.  Tickets are $20 for adults and children 13-17 are $10. Friday

GILLIAM, La. – NHRA South Central division racers converged on Thunder Road Raceway Park for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event.  The event is the fifth of six events that run through October where competitors will earn points toward both national and divisional championships.

Racers in 10 different classes along with the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson made qualifying and time trial runs today with eliminations in all classes scheduled for Sunday.  The division’s Sunset Performance Top Sportsman Series, KPE Top Dragster series are also in action this weekend with final qualifying passes continuing Saturday before beginning eliminations on Sunday.

Gates open Saturday at 8 a.m. with racing scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.  Tickets are $20 Saturday and Sunday for adults, children 13-17 are $10.  For more information please call the track, (318) 299-RACE, or visit www.racetrrp.com.

GILLIAM, La. - Thunder Road Raceway Park host the NHRA South Central Division on September 18-20. The event is one of 44 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s Sunset Performance Top Sportsman Series, KPE Top Dragster Series and NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson will also be run in conjunction with the event.

Gates at Thunder Road Raceway Park open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials are at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Comp Eliminator qualify at 1:30 and 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m. Round one for Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Comp Eliminator is at 10:30 a.m.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2015 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA’s seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2016 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2016 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division and regional teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a “double up” bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2016 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

SUNSET PERFORMANCE TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships. The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500. Top Sportsman racers may run the six South Central Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in the other NHRA divisions.

KPE TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Dragster class are vying for division championships. The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500.
